Selecting a Hair And Makeup Stylist

Connect with Your Stylist

You may interview two qualified stylists but choose one over the other. It’s about connecting. Do you and your stylist communicate well? Are messages returned in a timely manner? Are questions answered thoroughly?

Headpiece Selection

Discuss headpieces with your stylist before purchase. What style would best suit your hairstyle and wedding gown? If your headpiece has a veil, have it detach from the headpiece if possible. Does the headpiece have places where it can be secured to your hairstyle?

Pre-Trial Meeting

A pre-trial meeting allows you to view the stylist’s portfolio and meet her in person.

The Consultation

Schedule this three to four months in advance. During the consultation communicate likes and dislikes clearly. I sometimes hear, “You’re the professional. You know what should look best.” Yes, we have training and education, but you must be happy with the outcome.

Will the Make-Up Look Natural?

Make-up should not be too heavy or overdone but should add definition to your face, especially the eyes, cheekbones and lips. Your stylist may apply more blush or a deeper shade of lipstick than you normally wear. Remember that your wedding gown is considered formal attire and white may also wash out a bit of color. Make-up should enhance features, cover flaws, and last all day.

Will My Hair and Make-Up Last?

Enough hairpins and hairspray are used so your hairstyle should last all day. Most professional products used are either water-resistant or waterproof. There are also make-up sealers such as for brows and lips. Waterproof mascara is a must. Some stylists provide a touch-up kit that may include a make-up sponge, foundation, lipstick, disposable powder puffs, powder and extra hairpins. Professionally applied make-up should require minimal touch-ups.
