Ask the Newlyweds: Relocating? Maintain Relationships And Find Friends

So, your brand new hubby has found a brand new job. Unfortunately, it is five states away from where you are now! If you are stuck in a new town with no job, no friends, no family, starting a brand new life with your husband can take on a whole new meaning! Here are some ways to recover from relocation.

Find a job

Starting a job can open up a whole new social circle for you. Try to find a job that puts you in contact with a lot of people in the community, like working at a local store, the city library, a large corporation, or a non-profit organization.

Meet other couples

Your husband is sure to meet some new people at his workplace. Attend his work social functions if spouses are allowed. Or, invite one of your husband’s co-workers and his wife over to your new home for dinner.

Give yourself a tour of the new city

Contact the city’s chamber of commerce by phone or website, and discover the landmarks and sights to see in your new city. Spend a day (or more, depending on your city’s size) touring your new surroundings so they don’t seem so foreign to you. You never know how many new friends you may run into!

Volunteer

If you are having trouble finding a job, and you can live on hubby’s income, try volunteering at a local hospital, elementary school, or community center.

Join a parish

If you are looking for a parish, try visiting a few before choosing one. You can see which one suits your tastes, and possibly find a church that attracts people around your age range. With all the groups and activities available to participate in at church, you are sure to meet people.

Take a class

Get involved in an aerobics class at the gym. You will find the same people go to the same class each week—a good way to make fast friends. Also, find out what the local colleges or your community is offering for the upcoming quarter. Perhaps a media, art, or drama class will help you find others with similar interests to interact with.

Join a club

Find out if your community is involved in any clubs or organizations. Often times you can find book clubs or something of the like to participate in.

Keep in touch

It never hurts to hear from people back home. With the ability to e-mail from almost anywhere, it is easier than ever to keep in contact with your friends and family from your hometown. Plan visits and swap stories of things happening in your surroundings.
