Wedding Makeup Application Tips

Your wedding day is your time to be in the spotlight. Make sure you’re beautiful and camera-ready, yet strive to still look like yourself. Of course, try a few practice runs at home before the wedding to familiarize yourself with any foreign tools or colors you might not use everyday. Do not wait until your wedding day to try that fuchsia lipstick! Invest in good brushes if you plan to use them later. They can really make a difference.

Face

1) Start out with a clean face. Use a moisturizer you have tested beforehand to make sure you don’t have an allergic reaction. Even brides with oily skin can benefit from certain moisturizers made for their skin type. You may want to look for one with oil-absorbing properties that leave you refreshed without a greasy feeling.

2) Move on to concealer. Apply and blend where you need it most. For most brides, these areas are underneath the eyes, around the nose and mouth, and on any blemishes. Try not to cake on the concealer, especially if you are applying foundation as well.

3) Use a foundation that matches your skin tone. When buying foundation, test it only on your jaw line. Blend the foundation using a makeup sponge or your fingers. Double check the jaw line to make sure you don’t have a “mask” effect—it should match the skin of your neck.

4) For blush, either a bronzer or hint of color works well on your wedding day. With all colors, apply a small amount at first—you can always add more, but trying to remove it will ruin your foundation. Blush comes in many different types. Gel provides a sheer wash of color, but must be blended quickly once applied. Cream forms are more opaque. Powder is quick and easy to control. Select a color that complements your skin tone. Sweep the color onto the apple of your cheeks and onto the cheekbone.

5) Finish with power. You may want to keep this item with you all day to prevent shine in pictures.

Eyes

Eyes can be a difficult section to master, particularly if you don’t usually use eyeliner and would like to on your wedding day. Remember: practice makes perfect.

1) Start out paying attention to your brows. You might want to have them professionally waxed a week or two before the wedding if you feel nervous shaping them yourself. Brush them into place using a toothbrush or eyebrow comb. Fill in any gaps with matching powder or eyebrow pencil. Use a light, feathery stroke to mimic the hairs in your brow.

2) Brush on loose powder or use an eye shadow base (Clinique make a good one) before applying shadow. This will help prevent creasing and smudging. Start applying color in the outer corner and work your way in, blending carefully. A light-colored powder can be used to highlight the brow bone and the inner eye.

3) To line your eyes, start at the outer corner. It may help to pull the skin taut. Use your liner right at the lash line and draw a line to where your lashes thin out. It may help to draw a few short lines and connect them, rather than one long continuous line.

4) Even if you have never used an eyelash curler, you should consider it for your wedding day. It has an instant eye-opening effect. Starting at the base of the lashes, gently squeeze and hold the curler for a few seconds. Repeat, moving down the lashes.

5) Finally, apply WATERPROOF mascara, also starting at the base and using a zigzag motion to color all the lashes. For a slightly exotic look, concentrate on applying mascara to the very last outer lashes. Use a lash comb to remove any lumps.

Lips

1) Make sure lips are well moisturized and flake-free when you go to kiss your groom. Use a long-lasting lipstick that will stay on all day, but won’t rub off on others during the receiving line. For extra staying power, apply concealer and powder under your lipstick.

2) Carefully line your lips using a nude pencil, or one that matches your lipstick.

3) Using a lip brush or a very steady hand, apply lipstick and blot with a tissue. Slick on gloss for a shiny smile.
