Styles and Suggestions for Plus-Size Brides

Flipping through your favorite bridal magazine, you may be thinking to yourself, 'Do only size-2 women get married?' The styles shown and the models wearing them tend to be geared toward smaller women, it's true. But don't let that get you down! There is a gown out there to suit every figure and so many options for beautiful plus-size brides!

Long sleeves are a perfect choice for a bride who feels self-conscious about her arms. Be sure to choose a dress with sleeves that are sleek and fitted (such as lace or illusion) rather than puffy sleeves, which will add bulk. Another option is a wrap, which you can drape over your arms during the ceremony or throughout the reception.

Look for A-line silhouettes! These gowns will be fitted through the shoulders and bodice, flowing away from the waist to resemble the letter 'A'. This is a universally flattering shape and a great choice for the plus-sized bride!

Another silhouette you may find flattering is the empire waist. This waistline begins just below the bustline and is a great way to cover a tummy. Combined with an A-line skirt, this is one of the most popular options for plus-sized women.

Got great curves? Show them off with a great neckline! Open necklines such as scoop, keyhole, or V-necks are a perfect way to draw attention to your full bustline and away from problem areas.

The fabric you choose for your gown is also important. Choose lightweight fabrics like chiffon, lighter satins, and silk chantung, which will graze your figure beautifully stay away from heavy satins, crepe and velvet, which will cling to your body and emphasize any trouble spots. Matte fabrics are also a more slimming choice than those that are shiny.

Dresses without a lot of decoration tend to be the most flattering to a plus-sized figure. Too much lace or sequin detail add the illusion of extra pounds while more simple designs leave a bride looking lean. Save the sparkle for your accessories and you will bring attention to your (radiant!) face - try a sparky headpiece or drop earrings, or a glittery necklace.

Don't be alarmed if your dream gown costs just a little more because you are plus-sized. Designers generally charge extra due to the additional material being used, but the charge is generally reasonable - between $50 to $150, depending on the designer.

And speaking of designers, don't forget to pay special attention to those designers that pay special attention to you! Here is a list of bridal gown designers offering plus sizes: Alfred Angelo, Bonny MT, Diamond Collection, Emme Bridal, Forever Yours, Jim Hjelm, Jasmine, Jessica McClintock, Loralie, Mon Cheri, Mori Lee, Sweetheart, and Venus. Another great choice is David¡¦s Bridal, which is known for catering to the plus-size bride.
