Wedding Coordinators: A Brief Overview

You have the set the date for your wedding and your life is so busy you don’t know where to start or when everything is going to get done! It just seems like devoting time to wedding plans just keeps getting more and more difficult.

If you feel you are having trouble with planning your wedding, you may want to try calling a wedding coordinator. These professionals can be a valuable source when you are not interested or have no time to plan your wedding and are a wonderful asset for brides who are planning an out-of-town wedding. Wedding consultants do all of the dirty work when it comes to wedding planning-from negotiating cheaper prices, hiring vendors, and ordering all of your necessities.

You may be concerned that you cannot afford one of these professionals. The good news is that experienced wedding consultants are able to work with virtually any budget. Typically, wedding coordinators are hired to handle all of the details of your wedding, but some can be contracted to specialize in particular aspects of your wedding planning. Whether it be for the wedding day, reception, ceremony, or even just to map out the details and book your vendors, wedding coordinators can cater to any wish you have. If you do hire a wedding coordinator for the whole kit and kaboodle, you should expect to pay around 10 to 15 percent of your wedding budget.

There are several ways that you can hire a wedding coordinator. You can hire her for a freelance contract, where she gets paid by the hour, or you can hire a coordinator for a specific project of your wedding- it is all up to you. Most coordinators are willing to work with brides and their budgets, so be sure to ask about rates and budgets when you contact potential wedding coordinators. When calling around for rates also, have a list prepared for the coordinator to give her an idea of the types of tasks you would like for her to handle. This may make it easier for the coordinator to give you a base quote.

Also, make sure you have prepared many questions for your wedding coordinator. Here are some questions you may want to ask to make sure you are getting the most for your money:

Will you stick to my budget?

Will you create a proposal of all your plans in detail?

What do you think would be an ideal location for me?

Are you in contact with a number of florists, caterers, bands, photographers, and other important vendors in the area?

Will you review all contracts for me ?

Can you provide a calendar that gives details on the planning process?

Can you provide etiquette advice?

Will you coordinate delivery and setup times with the appropriate vendors?

On the wedding day, will you supervise the whole event?

Will you also book the honeymoon?

Lastly, be sure to get references from your wedding coordinator. You can get licensing information and/or a referral from the Association of Bridal Consultants at (860) 355-0464.
