FAQs on Tuxedos

Unless your fiancĂ© happens to be a professional opera singer, he has probably only worn a tuxedo once or twice before. With all the attention given to the perfect bridal gown, the groom’s attire is often overlooked until the last moment. We are here to help you understand his choices in tuxedos so he can feel as handsome and special as he is!

What tuxedo shop should we use?

Recommendations from friends are always the best way to go. You can also call around to compare prices, but it is important that you go to the store before making your decision. All tuxedos are not created equal, and of course you want his to be high quality, which you can only judge by looking at one of the designer being considered. You also want to visit the store to evaluate how professional they seem, and if you are confident they will make him look his best.

When should he pick out his tuxedo?

You should reserve tuxedos between three and six months before the wedding. This will allow you to be sure that you can get all the right sizes, and that the styles are current!

What should he bring with him when he goes to pick out the tuxedo?

He will need a bridesmaids’ dress swatch to choose a matching cummerbund or vest for the groomsmen. He should also have a swatch of your dress to match the shirt color – especially if you are wearing ivory instead of white.

Can he pick a tuxedo from a catalog?

Catalogs are great for getting ideas, but the final decision should be made only after trying on a tuxedo. It is difficult to get a sense of quality and fit otherwise!

Should we rent shoes?

Some tuxedo shops include shoes in the rental cost, which of course makes the decision easier. If budget permits, all men should rent the same shoes as well in order to complete the look. Tuxedo shoes are quite different in appearance from men’s typical dress shoes, and will create a much more formal look.

Who should wear a tuxedo to the wedding?

At a minimum, the groom and groomsmen. Depending on the formality of the wedding it is also common for the fathers and ring bearer to wear tuxedos. If grandfathers will be in attendance, asking them to wear tuxedos is a wonderful way to make them feel special!

Some of the groomsmen live out of town. How will they be able to get tuxedos?

Ask them to visit a local tuxedo or suit shop to get their measurements from a professional. Do not let his girlfriend do the measuring unless she is a tailor! No matter how great the tuxedo you pick out is - it will not look good unless it fits. He will need an accurate jacket size and length, and waist measurement. For the shirt, neck size and sleeve length are required. A final fitting will be done when he arrives for the wedding, but if the measurements were way off there is little that can be done.

What will it cost?

Prices range significantly based on the designer – you could pay from around $40 to $200 for a rental. Make sure you ask if there are additional charges for insurance, or dry cleaning. You will often need to pay extra if you chose a full back vest or need to rent shoes.

Should we expect a discount for the wedding party?

Most tuxedo shops will give a discount if you will be renting six or more tuxedos. Often this discount is a free rental for the groom. Be sure to ask the shop when making your decision.

What should he expect when picking up the tuxedos?

All of the men should go to the shop to pick up the tuxedos. They must try them on before leaving. Have someone you trust go with them to make sure that they fit well. A tailor should be on the premises to do last minute adjustments to ensure they fit perfectly. Also, confirm that all accessories match and are included with each suit.
