Wedding Themes? To do, or not to do?

Ever had a moment like this when talking about your wedding to a girlfriend, family member or board gal:

Question to you: “So, what’s your theme?”

Your reply: “Theme … uhh”

Your thought: “Theme!!?? I need a theme??”

So, what is in a theme? Well, this is often a debatable topic varying from the person who declares ‘The wedding is the theme!’ to the counter-argument of ‘A theme makes your wedding unique’. Both points of view are substantial and should be taken into consideration when you decide on “the look” that you want for your wedding. Everyone is of course different and therefore your wedding will be unique no matter what you decide – theme or no theme. Let us (for the sake of this article) assume that you are looking for a theme.

Where do you start? Themes can come in a multitude of forms. Your color choices can define your theme – perhaps you love purple. You can create a theme of purple using it in your flowers, centerpieces, invitations, bridesmaid dresses and so forth. Your flowers can define your theme – roses, tulips, hydrangea etc. (Just keep in mind that if you are planning to use real flowers you need to be aware of what flowers are available in the season of your wedding). The time of year can help you with a theme – a Christmas wedding, Halloween wedding, a spring garden wedding? The choices are endless!

So, how do you decide on your theme? Well, that of course is up to you. To give you some pointers though, consider things that you like or enjoy. Your favorite color, your favorite flower, the season you love the most, a sport you follow religiously, recreational activities that you just love, your culture or heritage or anything that you enjoy and would like to see as part of your big day. Perhaps there is something you and your fiancé do together that could be a theme? Or maybe the place he popped the question could be the theme? Again, the options to finding a theme that is right for you and your fiancé are infinite. It just takes a little time to figure out the ultimate look that you want for the day. Don’t worry about taking some time to think it through before you decide.

Once you have decided upon a theme it is up to you how much of the theme you want to integrate. Do you want a subtle effect with just a hint at your theme, or do you want everything to be related to the theme to make a bold statement? All of these choices will ultimately result in the wedding of your dreams. There are numerous ways to incorporate your theme of choice: invitations, favors, centerpieces, flowers, location, food, music, attire, decorations and so much more. Enjoy adding your theme to all these aspects as you plan. The most important thing about planning such an event is to have fun and delight in creating a beautiful day for you and your future husband.
